Steven White, Associate Professor in the Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, has won the 2010 EFMD Case Competition in the category of Emerging Chinese Competitors with his 3-case series on Shanghai Automotive’s acquisition of South Korea’s Ssangyong Motors. His co-author was Dr. XU Leiping of CEIBS.
The series, Shanghai Automotive and Ssangyong Motor: A Tale of Two Dragons, describes the challenges Chinese companies face when they choose acquisitions to pursue their strategic objectives of innovation and internationalization. They generate discussion around all three phases of the process: pre-deal decision-making, integration management, and divestiture. Already over 1,000 MBA and EMBA students in China and abroad have studied these cases for insights into how to make critical decisions and implement those decisions effectively.
The European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) has been organizing case writing competition for three decades. The aim of the competition, according to the official statement, is “to encourage the writing of case material involving European companies and institutions as well as material dealing with topics concerning other geographical areas such as the Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, generally underrepresented among the available sources.” Other awarding winning institutions of the 2010 competition include INSEAD, MIT Sloan School of Management, and many other prestigious business schools and research centers.
