A Full Record of Orientation of Tsinghua-MIT GMBA Class of 2017
Jul 13, 2020
What touches me the most about a recluse is not the solitude of the days that he lives ever after, but after the ups and downs of life, that moment when he decides to give up all his fame and gains for a tranquil life.

Two years of a full-time MBA program might not be a high ROI (Return On Investment) for most Chinese business people. However, over 50 Chinese and 38 international students from over 10 countries came to Tsinghua Global MBA class of 2017. With over 20 years of work experience, stable careers and rising life paths, some joined this program to realize their long-cherished Tsinghua dreams. Some were business fledglings who encountered career bottlenecks and hoped to become better prepared for future career; and some felt lost in business world and wanted to find true selves at university. There were also international students who knew little about China, but realized the countries importance in global business. They came to know about this ancient but fast developing country with ease in the new environment.

At the end of August in 2015, a group of people with different life stories came to Tsinghua University, for which they quit their jobs and started university life again.

Scene 1: I feel at university when riding a bike on the campus.

In the first week of registration, I had been busy walking around the big campus filling out forms and running errands. Harrison, my classmate, said that he was busy every day, but everything seemed so surreal that he wondered whether he was really ready to be a student again. I shared the same feelings and asked myself that many times – did I make the right decision to quit my job to study in this program?

On the eighth day after registration, I bought a bicycle. On an early morning with bright blue sky, I rode bicycle on campus watching the sunshine going through green leaves in front of the main academic building. At that moment, I felt wonderful and was completely confident about my decision. My classmate WEN Qi also said that she felt the world smiling on her when riding on campus.

Scene Two:  I will definitely remember this moment after many years

At our ice-breaking trip, more than 50 people stepped on our classmates, Dan and Guan’s shoulders to climb up over a 5 meter high wall. When asked how they felt, with bruises on shoulders, they joked that they just wanted some beer. Zijing, Dante and other classmates pulled people up from the top while getting scratched on their arms. Finally, all but Guan had conquered the wall. Then, Xiaolong, another classmate of mine, volunteered to hang himself upside down to reach and pull Guan up. Everyone had tears in their eyes and it was at that moment that I saw priceless commitment, responsibility and love which made our team different from any other.

Though it was a short one-day outdoor training, it already made a series of changes in our group and I had a strong feeling about it on our way back to Beijing. In fact, everything started to change.

Scene Three: Gathering Together in Elegance and Beauty— Welcome Gala for New Students

To present our perfect performances at the gala, our class spent three months in either the basement of Syllable KTV or a classroom at Tsinghua, rehearsing, reviewing and improving our ideas, scripts, choreography again and again, while also buying props.

On the evening of August 30, when music and dance filled the auditorium of Tsinghua University, upon hearing the thunderous applause, I felt that all our efforts were worthwhile.

Here I’d like to quote words from the show at the end of the gala:" 94 students from 18 countries all over the world gathered in Tsinghua MBA in Beijing. We believed that together we are here to inspire the most wild and brilliant ideas. 30 students have practiced two shows for three months to give you a unique and unforgettable night. ”

Let’s remember all of them, either on the stage or behind the scene.

We look forward to more shining moments of Tsinghua GMBA Class of 2017!
