On July 3, 2016, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management held its 2016 Commencement in the Gymnasium of Tsinghua University. More than 4,000 people, who included the graduates, their families and friends, and the faculty and staff of the School, participated in the Commencement. Tsinghua SEM Dean QIAN Yingyi hosted the ceremony. LU Mai, Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation, delivered the Commencement Address.

Tsinghua SEM Dean QIAN Yingyi hosts the 2016 Commencement
A total of 1,620 students graduated from Tsinghua SEM in the academic year of 2015-2016, including 658 undergraduate students and 962 graduate students.
The seven orators were LIU Guannan from the PhD programs, FENG Menglu from the Master’s programs, LIU Tiancheng from the MBA programs, LI Zhaoqiang from the EMBA programs, LIN Zhibin from the second-degree undergraduate programs, LI Linjia and XU Yejia from the undergraduate programs. They shared their stories of how the School had changed their lives as well as their vision for the future after graduation.

Following the orations by students, Dean QIAN Yingyi gave a short introduction of Mr. LU Mai, Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation, the commencement speaker. Mr. LU has been Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) since 1998, which is a public foundation initiated by Development Research Center of the State Council. Under his leadership, CDRF has delivered a number of high impact events and projects such as China Development Forum and China Development Report. In 2011, Mr. LU was awarded “Distinguished Individual in National Antipoverty Development” by the State Council Leading Group of Poverty Alleviation and Development.

In the commencement speech, Mr. LU Mai shared his life experience in the past 70 years and his key leanings on China’s modernization. He told students that the process of China’s modernization was full of hardship, distress and dilemmas and he encouraged students to be part of this remarkable transformation and make their contributions to the realization of China’s modernization. Mr. LU also introduced the work of China Development Research Foundation especially the research and social experiments in poverty reduction and child development that the Foundation is conducting. At the end of the speech, Mr. LU encouraged the graduates to have broad vision with specific action plans and advised them to be observant of society and be attentive to the poor.
