Jul 13, 2020

Tsinghua SEM and the Roundtable Association has had the great pleasure of  having Mr. Sun Zhenyao, the chairman of HiSoft and former president of HP China, as the second guest speaker of The Roundtable Association Discussion Series on Nov.15. Mr. Sun provided both Roundtable members and SEM students with an exceptional opportunity to hear first hand about his experiences and learn from his wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Mr. Sun shared his life, career experiences and thoughts starting out as a systems engineer and climbing his way up, eventually being appointed as the president of HP China. He emphasized that people need to change their mindsets and ways of operation and conduct as they get promoted to senior management levels. Mr. Sun also stressed the importance of delegation and that a successful leader must have the ability to get things done through others. In addition, he shared his thoughts about his change of position from working as a senior executive to his appointment as chairman of the board of directors. In essence, Mr. Sun emphasized that strategic thinking and the ability to predict industry fluctuations are crucial tools for success.

During the Q&A session, Mr. Sun asked everyone to call him Zhenyao at the beginning, thus closing the gap between him and the audience, increasing his accessibility and the overall intimacy of the experience. By doing so, Mr. Sun embodied the spirit behind the Roundtable Discussion Series. During this section, Mr. Sun also shared his thoughts on possible business opportunities in the future. In his view, as the Chinese economy continues developing, the service industry - which aims to provide people with more everyday convenience - will undergo a big leap forward.

The second Roundtable discussion session came to a close with Mr. Sun graciously agreeing to take pictures with Roundtable members. Mr. Sun's visit was truly an honor and a further proof of the Roundtable Discussion Series’ success and growing reputation. And yet, we conclude by adding that this is just the beginning and that all Roundtable members will continue to work diligently towards providing future influential Roundtable events.
