Jul 13, 2020

On March 15 of 2012, the final of Flextronics Business Case Writing Competition took place in Room 418 of Shunde building of Tsinghua SEM.

In retrospection of the autumn last year, Flextronics Business Case Writing Competition unveiled with the nice sound of a gong. During the nearly 6-month period, more than 20 universities including Tsinghua University, Pecking University and Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics participated in the competition and more than 50 case studies waited for approvals of judges. All the candidates revised their cases again and again from drafts to final versions. They conducted dialogues with heroes and heroines in the cases and also with themselves, asking for several times “what should I do if I were in this case?” Entrepreneurs and experienced professors from both China and abroad brought us classic and vivid business ethics cases and positions to enlighten the consideration and doubt against common phenomena.

There were altogether 15 teams in the final, among which 12 teams were rewarded with third-class prizes and 3 teams were left to elaborate their cases and experience the Q&A of judges to compete for the laurel of champion.

Mr. huang Yingqi as the vice president of Flextronics in charge of global enterprise social responsibility and employee relationship, Mr. Chen Shengmin as CEO of Global Chinese Enterprise Consulting Center and a researcher in Tsinghua Leadership Research Center, Mr. Bian Jie as the chief editor of Green Magazine were invited as special guests and judges to attend this competition.

Mr. Yang Bin, CPC party secretary of Tsinghua SEM and the director of Tsinghua SEM Leadership Center delivered a speech at the beginning. He highly praised students’ passion and deep thinking demonstrated in the competition. At the same time, he expressed expectations of development of business ethics education in business schools.

After the brief but brilliant speech, the competition stage was handed to the competitors. First, students from Class 2 of 2011 Tsinghua IMBA program such as Mr. Lu ShiyingJenny Tian ChungHeng Su YinPinky Hung brought with them the case “Loyalty to whom?” The special perspectives of IMBA students attracted the attention and interest of judges.

Followed was Mr. Ding Dawei, student from Class 2 of 2011 Tsinghua FMBA program. He displayed a case he experienced named “Sacking Mudasir and the plan of employment reduction and efficiency improvement”. The story filled with conflicts and self-review moved the judges deep in heart.

Afterwards, Ms. Zhang Xiaowei, Mr. Liu Xinwei and Ms. Chen Yanfei, also from Class 2 of 2011 Tsinghua FMBA program, displayed their case “6 hours of decision making” in a vivid way.

After these 3 teams displayed their cases, the judges left the stage to have discussions and evaluations. Mr. Jin Ge from 2010 Tsinghua PMBA and representatives of teams rewarded the third-class prizes brought us the round table forum entitled “How far away is business ethics?”

Afterwards, Mr. Jiang Peng as a faculty member of Tsinghua SEM came to the stage with other rewarded teams. They imitated the case study named “Survival and Destruction” which was also one of the cases rewarded the third-class prize.

Case study ceased with the thinking sparks of students and the intense applause, which made the audience experience the difficulty of decision making in reality. In the end, judges acclaimed the result. Because of excellent display, vivid story, intense conflicts and beautiful wording, Mr. Ding Dawei’s case “Sacking Mudasir and the plan of employment reduction and efficiency improvement” got the champion of this competition and the 20,000RMB bonus.

The competition achieved a successful close with the announcement of the presider Mr. Gao Xiang: “The competition today is a comma because it will continue in the future; the competition today is a question mark because we have too many puzzles left in heart along the process; the competition today is moreover an ellipsis. Ellipsis and blankness make us ponder what we are left to do and how we are able to make a difference in this world.” Such expectations of Mr. Gao waits for our appraisal and reflection in the next time of this competition.
