Three Nobel Laureates Discussed

On March 18, 2016, "The Role of the State in Economic Growth in East Asia" roundtable conference was held in Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM). 


The event was joined by many outstanding scholars, experts, business and political leaders from Asia, Europe, the United States and Latin America, including Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, University Professor at Columbia University, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics and winner of John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association in 1979, Professor Edmund Phelps, McVickar Professor of Political Economy at Columbia University and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics, Professor Michael Spence, William R. Berkley Professor in Economics & Business at New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics and winner of John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association in 1981, Professor Martin Feldstein, George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University and winner of John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association in 1977, and Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General and Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University.

The roundtable discussion was undertaken in four sessions: "Monetary policy, capital flows and capital market regulation”, "Stable, industrial policy and reform, the environment and income inequality”, "Education, research and development, integration of integration" and "Global Economic Governance-New Model, new institution?”. Speakers shared their research results on China's economic growth policies and strategies, and expressed their views on the effects of China's economic transformation on global and regional economies.

The roundtable conference was jointly organized by the Center on Global Economic Governance (CGEG) of Columbia University President’s Global Innovation Fund, Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia Global Centers | East Asia (Beijing), the Columbia University Initiative for Policy Dialogue, Tsinghua SEM, National Institute for Fiscal Studies of Tsinghua University and Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management.
