Six China-Roots Lectures were Held in 2012

China-Roots Program is a series of lectures and events designed for international students to quickly gain understanding of China’s business development and current condition of various industries. The program is organized by MBA Programs, Tsinghua SEM with strong support from prestigious professors, entrepreneurs and corporate senior managers. They share their in-depth knowledge in a certain field and rich experience from their work in China or related to China.

In 2012 there are six China-Roots lectures for both students from Tsinghua-MIT International MBA Program and exchange students in SEM.

 

 

 

 

1st Lecture: Venture Capital, Entrepreneurship and China's Capital Markets

Lecturer: Prof. JIA, Ning

Main Topics:

1. Development of Modern Entrepreneurship in China

2. Development of Venture Capital and Private Equity Industry in China

3. VC/PE in 2011-2012: Key Observations   

Introduction of Prof. JIA Ning:

Prof. Jia is the Associate professor of Accounting, and Associate Director of the China Business Case Center, School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University.

She received her B.S. in Computer Science from University of Minnesota in 2002, M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University in 2004, Ph.D. in Accounting from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2007.

Dr. Jia’s research focuses on venture capital, private equity as well as the growth and valuation of entrepreneurial companies. She is a leader of the World Economic Forum project Entrepreneurship and Successful Growth Strategies and a number of projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. She has written a number of cases on emerging companies such as Baidu, Focus Media, Suntech Power and eBay. Her research papers have been published in the California Management Review, Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies, Economic Perspectives, China Accounting Review etc. She is the winner of the 2010 California Management Review best paper award (the Accenture Award).

Dr. Jia teaches on the Tsinghua-HEC-Goldman Sachs Women Entrepreneurship Track Program (executive education), HBS-Tsinghua Private Equity and Venture Capital in China Program (executive education) and Stanford Business School Executive Program for Growing Companies (executive education). She also serves as an academic reviewer for the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

 

2nd Lecture: Leading and Managing in China

Lecturer: Mr. Frank T. Gallo

Main Topics:

1.           Different cultural foundations of Chinese versus Western leaders and how those influence their leadership styles. 

2.           Present findings from the research on unique leadership traits of Chinese leaders. 

3.           Draw from real examples in China of how leaders have addressed these cultural differences to make leadership work in China.

Introduction of Dr. Frank T. Gallo

Frank Gallo is the founder and president of Calypso Consulting, a firm dedicated to improving the level of talent in China. He currently serves as the Chief Leadership Consultant, Greater China for Aon Hewitt, the largest HR Consulting firm in the world. He is one of the foremost executive coaches in China. With over 30 years of management and human resources experience, he works with both Chinese and Western executives and middle managers helping them to be successful leaders in China and abroad. Frank has lived in China for twelve years and is the retired president of Watson Wyatt China. 

 

3rd Lecture: *Guanxi Building and Management in China

Lecturer: Prof. Luo Jar-Der

* Guanxi(关系)means relationship, network or interaction between people in Chinese.

Introduction of Prof. Jar-Der Luo:

Luo Jar-der (Ph.D.,SUNY-Stony Brook),Professor of Sociology and Ph.D. Advisor. Professor Luo Jar-der is also a joint professor in the Management School of the Tsinghua University in Taiwan. His teaching focuses on theory of social capital, social network analysis, and organizational theory. He also teaches management courses in many other overseas and domestic business schools. Professor Luo’s research endeavours to bring social network, especially Chinese Guangxi, into analysis of economic behaviors and business management. With others, he is trying to set up a research committee on social network analysis. Professor Luo has published widely in overseas and domestic academic journals. He has written The Chinese Trust Game, Textbook of Social Network Analysis and other books.

Professor Luo’ s main research interests include organization research, social network analysis, and economic sociology.

 

4th Lecture: One Country, Two Media Models-Media Landscape in Mainland China and Hong Kong

Lecturer: Leung Ka-Wing & Tammy Tam

Introduction of Tammy Tam & Leung Ka-Wing:

Leung Ka-Wing

Engaged in journalism 30 years, Mr. Leung has in-depth understanding of Hong Kong and U.S. media. He is the Hong Kong's well-known news anchor, host, and senior news executive. He is a former senior vice president of news & public affairs, and director of wireless TV News & public affairs in Asian television. He was also a former director and anchor of Chinese television news in San Francisco.

Mr. Leung works as a part-time lecturer of journalism and communication in Chinese University of Hong Kong, opening graduate and undergraduate courses including television news production, news translation and news writing.

Tammy Tam

As a senior journalist in Hong Kong, Ms. Tam is a former vice president in Department of News and Public Affairs and chief reporter of wireless TV news, and also a Senior Manager of cable TV in Asian Television. She was also a senior reporter of The Standard (Hong Kong Standard).

Ms Tan interviewed a number of major international, cross-strait and Hong Kong news. She is also a columnist in Hong Kong newspapers. She teaches courses on TV News Production and Chinese News Reports in the Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Shue Yan University as a part-time professor.

 

5th Lecture: Introduction to Consulting in China

Lecturer: Sean Wang

Introduction of Sean Wang:

Sean Wang is currently an associate director at Performance Improvement, Advisory Service, Ernst & Young.

A graduate of Tsinghua University, he went on to gain a Master in E.E.C.S. from University of Iowa and an MBA from Krannert School, Purdue University. Sean has 9- year extensive consulting experiences in Finance Transformation, IT Planning, Business Process Reengineering, Telecom Operations and Strategic analysis.

 

 

6th Lecture: The China Healthcare Industry

Lecturer: Michael Cheah

Introduction of Michael Cheah

Michael Cheah has more than 22years of general management experience in healthcare industry. He had19 years of China joint-venture business experience in start-ups and business turn-around situations.

He was the President of Xi’an Janssen Pharmaceutical,a Johnson & Johnson Group of Companies. Xi’an Janssen Pharmaceutical is the biggest MNC pharmaceutical company in China. Prior to J&J he was the Vice President & General Manager of Tianjin Smith Kline & French, a subsidiary of Glaxo Smith Kline(GSK). Tianjin Smith Kline is the leading OTC Company in China.
