Jul 12, 2020

On the morning of April 26, 2008, about 30 Tsinghua School of Economics and Management MBA students visited the Beijing Subway Corporation to understand the metro’s service and experience. The Beijing Subway is China’s first electric train system. The students also enjoyed the rare opportunity to test-drive a virtual train in the Beijing Subway’s training facility. The visit greatly impressed the students, including the international students from Korea and Singapore, who felt that Beijing Subway’s operational efficiency has improved tremendously over the years, and has reached global standards.

The Beijing Subway has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, as observed by the visiting Tsinghua MBA students. On April 21, just a few days before the visit, the Beijing Subway announced that it is implementing a revised daily operations system for subway Lines 1 and 2, once again shortening the interval periods during peak hours on these lines. Since 2007, the Beijing Subway Corporation has taken large scale measures to shorten the train interval times; a total of 13 rounds of initiatives were implemented, greatly improving the system’s operational efficiency.

The Beijing Subway Corporation’s Deputy Party Secretary, Mr Qi Shuzhi, introduced the Subway’s development history, operational model and unique public-oriented characteristics. Interacting with the Tsinghua MBA students, Mr Qi introduced details of the new enhancements to Lines 1 and 2 to shorten train intervals.

This visit was jointly organized by the Tsinghua MBA Love Association and the Tsinghua MBA Student Association’s Culture Development Committee. Attendees were Tsinghua MBA students, including many international students. The club’s chairman, Mr Jia Shaowei, expressed that MBA students built up system management capabilities through modular training and knowledge sessions such as this, so that they could become future managers and leaders. More importantly, this non-academic, social responsibility related activities are crucial to MBA education. This experience not only allowed the MBA students to learn about the Beijing Subway’s rapid development, but also increased understanding about the Beijing Subway Corporation’s operations and public-oriented characteristics, thus increasing Tsinghua MBA students’ corporate social responsibility awareness.
